Hand Lettering + Laser Cutting

We’ve learned a lot about hand lettering since we’ve started Laser Cut Co. Hand lettering is an art form where letters are drawn by hand. It differs from calligraphy, where the artist uses specific strokes to create consistent letters. Hand lettering has really re-emerged over the last 10 years and is popular with events - such as invitations, day-of signage, and place settings.

We absolutely love working with hand lettering artists because they are SO creative! Merging a traditional process with a more contemporary/digital process is super rewarding because it allows for new possbiliites. Laser cutting isn’t all that new though, it’s actually been around since the 1960’s. Hand lettering on the other hand…well, it’s been around for a while!

Below are pieces created by Rachel Tieken, of Half Moon Lettering. Rachel is always trying something new with materials/styles/etc. We’re always excited when Rachel asks us to work with her.

Just like everything that we put on the machine, we need a file. Most of hand lettering friends are also digital geniuses and create their own files and send them our way! Contemporary hand lettering can also be done on an iPad/digitally so there isn’t a need to scan/digitize the lettering.

Below are pieces created by Ashleigh Duhon, of Memory Lane Paperie. Ashleigh has a strong eye for design and her pieces are minimal and timeless! On the left is her lettering/the file and on the right are her finished pieces - laser engraved olive wood coasters.

Probably the best part of laser cutting/engraving pieces a hand lettering artist is how excited they get when they pick their pieces up! Interested in getting some of your own pieces out? Reach out to us to get a quote!
